Katimavik!
Katimavik in Peace River!

Hello!  My name is Matthew Ferrier and I am part of
the Katimavik group that is here in Peace River for
our second trimester (December 5- March 5).
Katimavik is Canada's leading national youth
volunteer-service program.  Programs run either for 8
or 9 month, all over Canada.  Participants are put in a
group with 10 other Canadians aged 17-21 and live in
three different Canadian communities and do 35 hours
of volunteer work every week on volunteer community
work projects.  I would recommend Katimavik to
anyone interested as it has changed my life in a very
positive way.  Anyways, I can say that my whole
group is really excited to be here and that we all
absolutely love Peace River, especially the people of
Peace River.  We all would like to really thank the
community of Peace River for welcoming us and
making us feel so comfortable in our new home.  For
more information on our group and what we are
planning check out my blog below, that I will be
updating constantly.  Also, if you are looking for more
information on Katimavik, please check out the
website,

Thanks,
-Matthew Ferrier

February 12, 2008

Hey everybody, it's me again!  Things have been pretty crazy the past couple weeks with
Katimavik, mostly because of billeting.  Our billeting period started on January 25 and
ended on February 8.  How it works, is every participant is billeted by a family in the
community for two weeks, so we can see how people live in different parts of Canada.
It's a very cool experience because participants do it once every trimester so we get to
really see that families all over Canada are different in some ways, but they all are the
same in some ways too.  St. Peastock gives thanks from the bottom of our hearts to all of
the billet families that billeted us.  We had a great time!  Being away from each other for
two weeks, really makes us appreciate what we have as a group, and it brings us closer
together.  We are always excited to see each other, especially after billeting.  Anyways,
other than that, we were busy this last weekend as we went to Falher to have a cluster
get-together with the Falher and Grande Prairie Katimavik groups.  Although it was pretty
cold, we managed to have a lot of fun, and that was good, because unfortunately we don't
see each other now until our rotation camp right at the end of the trimester.  That's about
all we've been up to, but we have a lot more planned for our last 3 weeks here.  This week
we have two workshops planned, and we are also volunteering at the Alberta Pond
Hockey Tournament this Saturday.  On Sunday, we are volunteering again, this time at
Peace Parent Link, as they are having a Family Day event, which everyone is invited to
come out and see.  Then on Monday, we are volunteering once again with Project
Porchlight.  This project goes around towns and gives each household one compact
fluorescent light bulb so they can replace a normal light bulb, and save energy.  For more
information, check out
www.projectporchlight.com.  We are also planning on going on an
excursion to Edmonton that following weekend, where we are plan on checking out many
things, including the West Edmonton Mall.  After that weekend, we have our last week of
work, and then we have our final presentation to the community.  After all of that, we pack
up and head off to our rotation camp for two days, and then, sadly, we leave for Ontario
for our last 3 months of Katimavik.  These next three weeks, are going to fly by and we're
all just trying to make them last.  Thanks for reading, and remember if you want to get in
contact with St. Peastock, our phone number is (780) 624-0010, and our e-mail is
stpeastock@hotmail.com.  Thanks again!
-Matt
